“Love Among the Ruins” — Edward Burne Jones

So, recently, I’ve been thinking about “love” and all of its many manifestations. I’ve also been thinking about how, so very often it seems, the greatest loves are often unfulfilled — or maybe that’s just me and my previous life as a ballet dancer. One of the many things about ballet which is embedded into my mind, is how many of the greatest classical ballets are infused with sadness and tragedy — Romeo and Juliet, of course, but also Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, La Sylphide, La Bayadère and others.

Of course, there are some, such as “The Nutcracker” among them, and my own personal favorite, “Jewels” which is a trilogy ballet created by Balanchine — which comprises three acts, based on jewels: emeralds, rubies and diamonds, with the grand and great Karinska creating the costumes. As a small girl, I was absolutely transfixed by the older girls wearing these gorgeous shimmering fabrics encrusted with jewels.

Isn’t the above just so very beautiful? I’m getting off track here, a bit.

In my personal experience, from a young girl, to an adult mid life female, I can definitely say that I have loved and been loved. Or —…
