What is Democracy???
When half of the population has had a basic human right taken from them???
I did not watch President Biden’s speech but read the transcript of it.
And — my thoughts? It all “sounds” good, the talking points about democracy, the “soul” of our nation, the “fight” for justice to prevail, but here’s the thing:
For the women of the United States, our democratic “freedom” to our own individual bodies has now been stripped away from us and so, thus my question: HOW can there BE a democracy in America when half of it’s citizens (women) no longer have bodily autonomy and free will? That is NOT democracy for an entire country; it is democracy not for all but for some.
I feel that President Biden’s heart is in the right place (maybe) but then I also wonder: WHY has it taken him SO long to say ANYTHING about this at all???
The timing of it all seems rather suspect to me and I experienced a certain unease in reading the transcript, because as lovely as it is, this repeated phrase of Americans “pulling together” seems rather hollow and empty.
Why? Because we didn’t “pull it together” when faced with a pandemic.
So, on the basis of that alone, it would seem to be rather a moot point.
Meaning: if Americans weren’t willing to pull together during an (ongoing) pandemic, then why are American’s going to do this NOW? Well, while I would never say I’m a total optimist, I also wouldn’t say that I am a total cynic…
