The Necklace —and Tiffany’s Blue Box
I have often wondered at the significance of the legendary and iconic blue box of Tiffany’s. How did this particular “look” come to be? And, what is the meaning behind it? And, is the blue color teal or more turquoise?
In the French short story, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, the narrative focuses on the female character of Madame Loisel and how her obsession with wealth and status ultimately proves the undoing of her and ends up costing both her and husband dearly.
Perhaps in some way, the “Blue Box” of Tiffany’s is meant to signify that the item inside is real, authentic and always of the highest quality and origin. Although I am not materialistic or envious of others, I also AM a girl who appreciates a beautiful blue box, tied with white ribbon and the delight in opening it, momentarily breathless at what it might contain inside.
Because if Audrey Hepburn can have “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” then so can I.
