Princess Diana Deserved Better Re: Sculpture

I think that Prince William and Prince Harry’s hearts were in the right place but to me this sculpture does not remind me of the Princess Diana that so enchanted and delighted me.

And apparently, the UK paper “The Guardian” agrees with me, sadly.

In thinking about this perhaps it is unfair to think that any sculptural artwork could ever hope to convey both the inherent fragility and the fierce independence of the Princess; her brilliant blazing spirit is missing and instead she is depicted as subdued and serene instead of the adventurous soul that she so beautifully was and will always be. It saddens me greatly.

Because — in both life and in death — Princess Diana deserved so much more.

Like many women, I have always felt such an affinity for her — her trials and tribulations — the path that she trod, that so many women, including myself do, over the course of a life: from innocent girl with romantic ideals to wiser and stronger woman who has seen/felt and experienced betrayal, disappointment and sadness. The narrative arc, if you will, of “growing up.”

And she did so beautifully — messily — angrily- until finally arriving at a sense of peacefulness after her divorce…and…
