Magritte’s “ The Empire of Light” Painting — Because Mondays Are Never Easy…

I’m currently studying an online modern art course and this particular work really made an impression on me. And I also wanted to write about it because it’s the beginning of the week, and the weather/news is dreary.

Also, I’m one of those people who believes that art is IMPORTANT.

And although I minored in Art History, and thought I had a good understanding of major art movements and artists, I am discovering that there is still yet SO very much that I don’t know, which is wonderful because I absolutely love learning and acquiring all kinds of knowledge.

What stands out to me about this work is just how many times Magritte painted variations of it, particularly because so many people wanted it!

And I’m thinking that perhaps Magritte didn’t want to disappoint anyone.

Without harkening back to my brief time as a university lecturer, I just want to talk about why I find this work so very haunting. It feels as if the dichotomy of both lightness and darkness that exist in each of us to varying degrees is very much on display here. When I first looked at this work…
