Madonna Louise Ciccone

I’ve always been fascinated by the NYC 1980’s era Madonna who was part of the downtown New York art scene. This was, of course, before she became MADONNA and globally famous. During the time this picture was taken, she was starting to make a name for herself and was a “club kid” — I chose this picture specifically because I am now adding my voice to the chorus of writing about the most recent appearance of Madonna at the Grammy’s.

I love this picture of Madonna: pretty, stylish and a rad sense of fierceness.

I also love her brief romance with the artist Jean Michel Basquiat.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this most recent footage of Madonna. I’ll admit right up front that it saddens me personally that I no longer recognize Madonna anymore. I’ll also say that with aging in general though, I also sometimes don’t always recognize my own self anymore either. That’s what happens with aging: we don’t always recognize “who” we are “looking at” anymore when we pass by a window and see our reflection or look in the mirror. “Who’s that girl?” to quote from a Madonna song.

There’s so much about aging that no one prepares us for. When we’re younger, the fact that we might, with luck and grace, one day be middle aged seems so very far off…
