“I’m Just Waiting on a Friend”

--

And she knows who she is…

Yes, I remember her once saying this was one of her fave Stones songs and I’m not sure which of us here is Mick and which of us here is Keith (maybe we’re both?). What I DO know is that I have missed her terribly and that without her presence my world is not the same. I would stand in the doorway with her anywhere because “I need someone I can cry to, I need someone to protect”…

I could quite literally write a novella detailing the importance of this person and our friendship to my life but I fear I could never fully do it justice because the complex and layered emotions almost defy explanation, much less words.

But what I CAN write is that “she shines, in a world full of ugliness” (NIN).

I miss her immeasurably and as we often used to say to one another: “Love you to the moon and back” — can the distance between the moon and the earth be measured? I am sure that it can, but can the distance created by miscommunication and misunderstanding be so easily calculated? I don’t think so, but what I hope is that the distance can be overcome and, as I have so often heard on the platform at London Underground: “Please mind the gap” -and I will, and I will wait on that platform for her, to embrace, forever.

I can also say this too, or rather paraphrase Mick and Keith: “A smile relieves a heart that grieves.” We have both grieved too much, it is now time for smiles.

And — clove cigs too — because “she knows she knows she knows” my heart.
