Excellent piece of writing and yes, I DO have friends on both sides of the economic spectrum. I've also lived this for my own self (growing up with wealth, then being married and having income decline). There ARE differences, to be sure.

And yes, I do try to engage cashiers if I feel that they would welcome it; they are people, too.

So many forget that, I think.
