Diminishing Returns in a Material World

I chose the name of my blog because it’s reflective of me and “who” I am.

I am a “girly girl” — I love pretty things. “Beauty” in all its many manifestations is very important to me. I need to be surrounded by beauty.

Having said this though, the hyper capitalistic consumerist culture that we all are currently living in, is becoming a place that I no longer really enjoy.

Like most people, I have cut back on my spending, apart from essentials.

I’ve noticed a trend among others wherein they are having to work SO hard at their jobs, for very little improvement in salary and benefits, for example

There’s a saying: “All that glitters is not gold” and that is so very true.

I recently spoke with a dear friend of mine who was sharing with me that as a state government employee, she often works until late at night, sometimes not leaving her job until after 9 PM! She is salaried, so there is no overtime and she struggles a lot with exhaustion and burn out. This is all too sadly, nothing new with regards to the work culture in the U.S.

It saddens me greatly though, because like many of us, me included, she worked very diligently to obtain further graduate education and yet now feels as if it was perhaps all for nothing (apart from…
