“And The Nobel Prize in Literature Goes to: Annie Ernaux”
This is such wonderful news! Especially amid relentless turmoil in the world right now. This is especially notable because Annie Ernaux, according to the NY Times: “ Becomes only the 17th female writer to have won the prize, widely considered the most prestigious award in world literature, since it was formed in 1901.”
I am somewhat familiar with her work and am beyond happy that she has been added to this pantheon (even winning over the avowed favorite of Salman Rushdie). For me personally, I love how unsparingly she writes about topics often deemed controversial: abortion, affairs, and her own personal journey from a working class background in class conscious France, in particular. She (and her work) are illuminating the lives of women globally and her writing style (from what I have read) is something that is both profoundly moving and also unsparingly flinching at herself.
Here’s the link for the article; and, if I may suggest for further reading of her work, “The Years” which is quite amazing, as well as her work “A Simple Passion.” She writes with courage, bravery and honesty and this, in turn, transmutes the personal lived experiences of all women today.
