Most of which have not been heard of — because: they were women.

To this day, the work of Alice Guy-Blaché remains largely unknown, and yet, Blaché was not only the first female filmmaker (having complete control of her films) but also the first filmmaker to depict a story on film.

I found myself riveted to this most engrossing story of a woman that I had not heard of. It made me wonder: how many other women had never heard of her, either? So much of Western Canonical Literature is made up almost exclusively of white men (shocker, I know!) and over the years, brief forays into including OTHER writers from OTHER countries have been attempted.

But sadly, rarely do they succeed. Isabel Allende? Yes, more prominent.

Clarice Lispector? Not so much. Anais Nin? Maybe, but only for her erotica.

Women are systematically erased from so much of culture. It makes me wonder how many other wonderfully gifted women artists existed that created and…
